Tom and Marinda, both natives of Zimbabwe, met in Jo’burg, South Africa, and married in 1985. In 2000, they moved to Canada with hope and determination for a brighter future for their children. Settling in Walnut Grove near Vancouver, their conviction that "We Become What We Believe" and support from friends and family helped them make Canada home.
Inspired by a 2005 trip to South Africa, Marinda envisioned bringing Africa to Canada, leading to the opening of African Breese Imports in North Vancouver in 2007 after buying a local shop. The business, which grew into a family venture involving their children and Marinda’s parents, expanded to Kitsilano in 2012, offering products from several countries and showcasing South African art, all while focusing on genuine connections with customers.
While Tom and Marinda –and their clients –love the nostalgia and pleasure provided by the products, the focus has always been on connection – on truly seeing their customers, and trying to understand their needs and values.
